The thing that makes a lot of male authors unacceptable to me is that they’ll construct all sorts of fantasy worlds, such as in GRRM’s case, a world with sorcerers and witches and dragons and ice zombies and blood magic, and yet they have to include rampant, consistent, horrific, excessive sexual violence toward and objectification of women for some kind of “social commentary”. You could do a brilliant commentary on patriarchy without explicit scenes of rape or sexualization - female authors manage to do so all the time, funnily enough. We have to realize at some point that male authors have a macabre and voyeuristic obsession with women being subjected to violence of all kinds.

Honestly, not to beat a dead horse, but it’s absolutely wild to me that 150 years ago, uptight Brits and the French could go around teaching their colonial subjects that homosexuality is an abomination and in many places causing a much more severe attitude to be taken towards same-sex relations, and today when most western countries are only a few decades into not viewing homosexuality as a mental illness, you have lowkey racists talking about what savages people from so and so country are for their homophobia. This isn’t to say that the people from post-colonial countries upholding homophobia today should not be held responsible for their attitudes, but like, the boldness of using this to talk about The Ethnics having some kind of eternal homophobia ingrained on a genetic level when it was in many cases your ancestor’s societies who imposed their values onto these people, and you somehow get to act like you and your people are the Ubermenschen of empathy and reason and the capacity to grow and others fundamentally lack this capacity

apparently native american tribes were in contact with the donner party and offered them food when they saw the colonists were starving and the donner party turned them down and decided to go the whole “cannibalism” route instead.
Until now the Native American perspective has been left out of the telling of the Donner tragedy, not because the wel mel ti did not remember the pioneers, but because they were never asked, or perhaps were not ready to share. Their oral tradition recalls the starving strangers who camped in an area that was unsuitable for that time of year. Taking pity on the pioneers, the northern Washoe attempted to feed them, leaving rabbit meat and wild potatoes near the camps. Another account states that they tried to bring the Donner Party a deer carcass, but were shot at as they approached. Later, some wel mel ti observed the migrants eating human remains. Fearing for their lives, the area’s native inhabitants continued to watch the strangers but avoided further contact. These stories, and the archaeological evidence that appears to support them, certainly complicated my interpretation of the Donner Party event. The migrants at Alder Creek were not surviving in the mountains alone—the northern Washoe were there, and they had tried to help. (source)
